DALLAS WHITE ROCK MARATHON RECAP. December 15, 2011

Filed under: dallas,expo,form,gel,hills,marathon,medal,pics of me :),race,rain,recap,relay,run,tape,TNT,walk — Courtney @ I CAN DO THIS @ 8:20 am

This is a race I’ll never do again.

First of all, I forgot how cold Texas is. I hate the cold. Since I’ve lived in Florida 9 years, my perception of cold has shifted and it’s hard for me to imagine anything under 50. 60 is cold to me.

Anyway, cold is not the race’s fault.

.

Starting with the expo.

The expo was awesome. It was the Automobile Building of Fair Park. I’d heard horror stories about the parking, but we were able to park right behind the DAR building by the trains, with no problems.

I love race expos.

I usually don’t buy stuff, but I was on a mission for arm warmers and a t-shirt for my coach. I loved how the expo was laid out. I have to go through the booths in a methodical fashion, and this made it easy to do. Also, we went on Friday, so it wasn’t very crowded at all.

Packet Pick-Up and race t-shirts were on opposite ends of the building, which made it hard to stick to my clockwise plan for hitting all the booths (my compadres kept stopping along the way).

But from there,  it was easy to hit all the booths.

Clif -

The Clif booth was the same as it usually is. Samples of each of the Clif products, and the pace team people. I got my 4:15 pace band and asked them what it means if I signed up for a pace team already. It was Star, and she told me that they weren’t doing sign-ups. When I said I did it on the website, she said “Oh, I forgot they do that now. It doesn’t really mean anything.”

Well, I did it for the free stuff anyway, but I still haven’t gotten anything. (They said they send you a bunch of samples of Clif products.)

When I asked her which corral the 4:15 pacer would be in, she said she didn’t know. The race wasn’t telling them anything.

.

Run On -

Run On is the local running store in Dallas with several locations. They had a nice big presence at the expo with 20% off everything. I got my coach a White Rock shirt.

.

Luke’s Locker -

Also a big running store in Dallas. Also 20% off everything. They had tons of clothes, but we just ended up getting a bunch of gels. $1.50 for Roctane and $1 for all other gels.

.

Hot Chocolate 15K -

This is a race in Dallas with a cute theme. They were doing Ghirardelli- dipped marshmallows at their expo booth. I didn’t try one, but my mom camped out and had several.

.

RockTape -

There were several booths (the running stores) taping people up for free. RockTape had a booth and I went there. Since I’ve been in treatment for my psoas hip flexor for the last 6 weeks, I was nervous about it hurting during the race. My PT had taped me up a couple of weeks ago, so I went to the RockTape guys to tape my psoas and IT. It worked!

.

Sport Hooks -

I get a Christmas ornament for each marathon, so I saw this one at the expo and had to have it. <3

.

Pearl Izumi -

I wanted to find some black arm sleeves so I could wear my sleeveless shirt which was more comfortable than the long sleeve one I’d packed. But I found these at the Pearl Izumi booth and had to have them because they were pink, white and black!

.

.

On race day, I woke up at 3am to thunder and lightning. When it was time to head down to Fair Park, the storm had stopped but the rain continued on.

Luckily, my sister-in-law brought disposable ponchos with her, and she had enough for all of us. It was 42* at the start, with a wind chill of 37*.

It only stopped raining for about 5 minutes at mile 25.

.

My brother sagged for the relay team, and got this picture out of the car while he passed runners at mile 20 on Garland Road.

The picture really sums up the gloom of the whole race.

.

.

So back to the beginning of this post.

I will never do this race again.

.

We’d heard horrors about the traffic, and apparently they improved it this year. My brother dropped us off as close as he could get, and we still had to walk quite a way in the freezing cold rain. We got to a building with a restroom line longer than any line I’ve seen in my life. Somehow, we found some downstairs restroom that only took about 10 minutes.

My dad, sister-in-law, and boyfriend peeled off pretty quickly because they had to catch their relay shuttles to the transition points. My mom ran the first leg so she started with me.

Mom and I walked over to the corral area and it was a mess. It was very narrow so not everyone could get in. There were only a couple of entrances into the corral, so if you weren’t in the corral that was right at the entrance, it wasn’t possible to get forward or backward to your corral. Some people were jumping the fence. It was stupid.

The starting line was as lame as they come. It was just a banner strung across the road against the miserable back drop of Fair Park.

photo: dallas morning news

.

The national anthem was supposed to be at 7:50, wheelchair start at 7:55 and runners at 8:00. So….we heard the wheelchairs go off. Everyone started talking  – we all thought they skipped the anthem because we would have heard it.

Then a few minutes later, someone started singing. She sounded as miserable as we felt.

.

The beginning and end of the course are very ugly. It’s along Haskell which is sortof industrial and run down. But once we got into downtown, it was nice. There were lots of spectators and we heard church bells.

The puddles were ridiculous. I sloshed right through them even when everyone went around them, not even thinking that there might be holes in the bottom. I was lucky. My boyfriend talked to one guy who rolled his ankle in one.

(I’m wondering if this is how I hurt my ankle and just didn’t realize it.)

.

The streets were too narrow for 13,000 runners. I had to fight through people all the way to the split at mile 9, when it finally thinned out.

.

Ok so I made it to the starting line pain free. I’ve been in treatment for 6 weeks for a hip flexor/IT issue. I felt great at the start!

But around mile 3, I started having a pain in my left ankle.

It was nothing I’d felt before, so I figured it would go away quickly. Looking back, maybe I did it going through a puddle and didn’t realize it. Later, everything from the knee down hurt. (Eventually, everything from the hips down hurt!)

I started to look for a med tent.

I saw a banner at mile 7 so I crossed to the right side of the road. There was a tent but not medical. I asked the guys if they were the med tent, and they said it was across the street.

(I thought “are you effing kidding me?” and that might have slipped out of my mouth.)

So now I had to cross the traffic you can see in that picture above to get to the med tent.

I felt like a schmuck getting in all those people’s way, but I did the best I could.

I approached the tent and there were 3 people huddled under it facing in. I said “Excuse me. Are you guys medical?” They just looked at each other. One woman said “Well, I’m medical.” (wtf)

I asked if she had tylenol or advil. She said “hmmm, I’m not sure.” I glanced at my watch to see how much time I was losing. Then she turned around and rummaged through a box and said “oh, here’s some.”

Worst med tent ever. I thanked her.

.

At this point, I already couldn’t unbend the fingers on my right hand, so tearing open the package was not working. I asked a spectator to help me, and she did.

About the spectators and volunteers…

photo: dallas morning news

I couldn’t believe how many people were standing out there in the cold rain for us. I thought they must be colder than we were because they just stood there for hours! It is always humbling to see the support people that make a marathon happen, but it was even more so in this weather.

.

I really had to pick up the pace in mile 8 to make up for my stop. I still wasn’t able to get that mile down to the right time. But for the first 12 miles, everything was pretty much on track to make my 4:15 goal time.

Mile 1 – 10:09

Mile 2 – 9:46

Mile 3 – 9:44

Mile 4 – 9:47

Mile 5 – 9:43

Mile 6 – 9:47

Mile 7 – 9:44

Mile 8 – 10:22

Mile 9 – 9:51

Mile 10 – 9:47

Mile 11 – 9:42

Mile 12 – 9:40

photo: dallas morning news

Mile 12 culminated in this hill. Once you reach the top, you can see the lake for the first time, and then it’s 8 miles around the lake.

I really don’t know what happened, but I fell apart at the half way mark and never recovered. I was hurting so bad. My ankles and calves. In mile 13, I took off my right glove and my hand was red and swollen. I couldn’t unbend my fingers, and I got tingles all up my arm when I tried.

Of course, I panicked and thought I was getting frostbite. So I spent a good 20 minutes worried.

At mile 14,  I started to think that getting the wet gloves off my hands might be a good idea. I took them off and carried them for a while just in case I was wrong and needed to put them back on.

I dropped them around mile 15 and pushed my arm sleeves down to my wrists, which were also soaked.

Mile 13 – 10:19

Mile 14 – 10:08

Mile 15 – 11:42

When I dropped my gloves, I stopped to stretch my IT bands. They were both tightening at this point and I thought I should try to take care of it before it got worse.

Mile 16 – 10:43

Mile 17 – 11:16

BEST PART OF THE RACE!

At mile 16.5, I got to see Ken because the relay transition was right on the course and he was there waiting for my sister-in-law. There was a steep hill right before transition, and I almost walked up it, but I didn’t want him to see me walking.

I saw his face in the crowd and he had his hands out. I stopped to kiss him, and I peeled off my arm sleeves so he could send them back with my sister-in-law.

I told him everything hurt, but I didn’t start crying like I usually do when I see him on a hard run.

.

I was off again. But I wasn’t moving very fast.

Mile 18 – 10:38

Mile 19 – 10:37

He passed me at this point because once he started his leg, he averaged a 7:40 pace for 10 miles.

We had the worst part of the weather on this section of course. We were coming around the end of the lake, and the rain was blowing sideways from the lake. It was the hardest it had rained the whole way.

I think after I saw him, I was done. It was SO.FREAKING.HARD.

I couldn’t get my body to move any faster, it hurt so bad.

I was fine with the rain, my breathing was easy. I didn’t feel labored at all. But my legs wouldn’t go.

Mile 20 – 11:48

Mile 21 – 11:44

photo: dallas morning news

They call this the Dolly Parton Hills because it’s 2 steep hills right after each other. I only saw one unless I was in denial over the other one?

You can only see one of the guys in this picture, but there are men at the water stop dressed as Dolly Parton.

When I got to this point, I walked. Besides stopping a few times to stretch, it was the first time in the race I had walked, and after that, I feel like I did as much walking as running.

It was right here that the 4:30 pace team passed me.

I was devastated because 4:30 was my “B goal”.

4:30 is a 10:18 pace, and at this point, I was 30 seconds a mile slower than my “A goal” which I had trained for and thought I was capable of.

For a few seconds, I tried to fall in behind them, but I just couldn’t keep up. My legs were not moving!

.

I kinda gave up here. I tried walking to stretch out my legs. It didn’t hurt any less than running, so I would start running again. It didn’t feel like I was moving at all.

Believe it or not, this is a smile.

I spent the next hour running and walking and just hoping I finished under 5 hours.

Mile 22 – 12:00

Mile 23 – 11:46

In mile 24, it stopped raining and I took off my poncho. I was tired of it, as silly as it sounds, I didn’t want to cross the finish line wearing it.

Mile 24 – 12:16

Mile 25 – 12:22

Mile 26 – 11:23

.29 – 10:13

.

The finish line was around a blind corner. That was dumb. I didn’t know where it was because I thought it was going to be the same as the starting line. I felt lost.

My family saw me before I saw them because I could hear my mom.

But we turned a corner and I saw all the spectators.

Typically I can pick up the pace by about 2min/mile at the end of any run – even a 20 miler.

The one thing that makes me feel better about my finish time is that I could only pick up my feet fast enough to average 10:13 for the last .29 miles. I knew I had pushed my body about as far as I could on that day.

.

I also think I kept my form tighter than I ever have in a marathon. I think my body is much stronger this time, and that also makes me feel better about my disappointing finish.

.

So there it is.

4:39:21

.

I’m so disappointed with my performance.

It was worse than either of my 20 milers.

It hurt worse than anything I’ve ever done in my life.

It was harder than both of my other marathons put together.

And it was only a 6 minute PR.

.

I really don’t even feel proud of my medal, although I am trying.

.

What went wrong in this race?

I still don’t have an answer.

The weather? The course?

I’m driving myself crazy trying to think what I could have done differently to have a better outcome. I can’t find it. I didn’t go out too fast – my hydration and nutrition were ideal – I don’t know.

.

Now I just want a do-over. The bad thing about marathons is that you can just find one the next weekend and try again. My coach wants me to wait a year to do another one and just focus on improving my half and 5K times.

I’m training for Disney’s Princess Half Marathon with Team In Training, and I’m happy to be back with the TEAM. So hopefully, I’ll soon get over this marathon, take it for what it is – a PR on a bad day. And look forward to some good races in the spring.

5 DAYS. November 27, 2011

Marathon countdown: 5 days!

.

After my 10 miler, my crazy psoas started hurting so bad that I had to take an entire week off. NOT the best thing for my mental state. But a week went by and I ran a painless 4.5 miles on Saturday. Tuesday night is track, but I’m getting an easy workout. Then it’s rest till Sunday! I’m still not happy to go that long without running, but I guess I will appreciate it when I’m at mile 25 and nothing hurts.

.

I finally found all the PINK that I was looking for.

It started with an Essie Fiesta pedicure. I found a color at Ulta similar, so I’ll use that on my fingers when I get to Dallas (can’t have painted nails at work)

And I have an option for temps above 50 or temps below 50.

.

CLOTHES, SO IMPORTANT. November 18, 2011

Taper = obsess over race.

2 weeks left till the race and all I do is think about it. Right now, I’m thinking about clothes the way I did before Disney. Like Orlando, Dallas could be 70 or 40 on race day. Makes it hard to plan.

It will be the first time I’m not wearing a TNT singlet for a marathon.

Disney

San Diego

.

For some reason, I’m feeling PINK.

I think I love this picture of Dorothy and it just sticks in my head when I think about cute marathon outfit.

Mile Posts

(Or maybe it’s her killer abs that I can’t get out of my head.)

.

Anyway…

I don’t know what the weather will be, so I don’t know if I need sleeves or not. I think if it’s 55 or above, I can wear sleeveless with arm warmers that I can take off.

.

I bought this yesterday and it seems pretty warm. I’m trying to figure out how cold it would have to be to wear it. I guess it depends on if it will be sunny or not too.

.

DALLAS MARATHON – 2 1/2 WEEKS OUT. November 17, 2011

Filed under: dallas,injury,marathon,pics of me :),speed,tempo,track,training — Courtney @ I CAN DO THIS @ 7:38 pm

My long run this weekend was supposed to be 22 miles, but my coach dropped it to a 10 miler at 1 min/mile faster than marathon goal pace. Mentally, that was huge. Ever since he told me that, I feel like the marathon is right around the corner. It is!

.

This week, track was a little harder than usual. It was quarters. I can’t remember how many, but my best was 1:29. I wore my fast shoes for the second time and I love them. More later.

.

Tempo run this morning was THE HARDEST workout I’ve done in a very long time. It was 72* and foggy this morning.

It was so foggy that there were water droplets on my eyelashes when I was running.

.

We run a mile warmup, then strides, then we do our tempo miles. I was supposed to do 8:00, 8:00, then 3:40 for 1/2 mile. Total 19:40 for 2.5 miles.

In the email last night, my coach broke down the last 1/2 mile into quarters – 1:50. That made it seem better because I know I can do 1:50 quarters at track.

Well, it was hard. It kicked my butt and I kicked back. I made the first 2 miles perfectly. Even the quarters were right at 2:00 each. But I was running almost as hard as I could, so when I went back out for the 1/2 mile, I didn’t even speed up. 2:00 for the next quarter. The last quarter, I just ran as fast as I could. I was breathing so loud, and I came in at 1:53.

Although I was 17 seconds too slow today, I gave 100% effort and worked so hard. I could feel my legs after I was done. I was super happy.

.

.

Next stop on the agenda today was PT.

I effed up my hip in a car accident in high school, and it gives me problems in my hip flexor when I run sometimes. It was getting bad and I was getting pain in other places, so I went to see a dr.

It has improved dramatically over the 3 weeks I’ve seen him.

This is my favorite part – lay on a heating pad with a tens machine hooked up to my back.

But then he takes me in another room and wiggles around my hip and cracks things. I don’t like that, but it works.

It’s my psoas muscle that’s getting pinched (the orange one), so as long as that behaves in Dallas, I’ll be running injury-free!

.

After that, I went looking for a shirt to wear in case it’s cold in Dallas. I’m worried I’ll be too cold in sleeveless.

You really can’t tell how obnoxious the pink is from this picture. Think highlighter.

.

I went extreme couponing today at target!

I like these Gatorade Prime things because they’re like taking a gel right before a run, but you don’t really need water.

They had $1 off coupons on them, and they only cost $1.27, so I got 10 of them for $2.70

Things like this happen to me all the time!

.

So that’s the deal. Boring post, but I’m trying to journal more so I can read back next time and see what worked.

DALLAS TRAINING – TAPER TIME. November 13, 2011

I know I’m going to regret not journaling this whole training cycle, but I just never found the motivation to write in my blog. At least I logged everything in dailymile and I can go back to those entries next time.

.

Anyway, Dallas White Rock Marathon is 3 weeks from today.

I thought I had one more long run to do – 22 miles next weekend.

But I got an email from my coach today saying that we’re changing that to a sub-10K pace 10 miler.

Although the hard work is not done, the long miles are!

.

Now what?

I know people hate the taper. I love it.

I freakin love it.

I basically think about the race 24/7. I stalk photos from previous years. I read race recaps. I go over the course again and again. I think about my race day outfit. I visualize my run. I drive everyone around me CRAZY.

.

GOAL = 4:30

My coach thinks I can do better than 4:30. I think I can do better. My two 20-milers have been faster than marathon goal pace (10:18). But I’m too scared of not making my goal if I set it any higher. Already, 4:30 is 15 minutes off my PR in San Diego, so I will be happy to make that goal.

.

In January, I ran my first marathon

Walt Disney World Marathon – 4:59:23

In June, I took 15 minutes off my time

San Diego Rock ‘N’ Roll Marathon – 4:45:08

So what makes me think I can take AT LEAST 15 more minutes off my time?

… My rock solid training. I have a coach who pushes me so far beyond what I could have ever thought I could do. Less than a year ago, I was sending him nasty emails about not wanting to run to the point of discomfort – how I’d rather run slow and enjoy it. lol

.

I run track every Tuesday. The workout varies, but it’s a mixture of quarters, halves and miles. At the beginning of the summer, I could run like an 8:14 best mile, and maybe 1:45 for a quarter.

Now, my best mile is 7:23 and my best quarter is 1:29

I <3 my coach :)

LONG RUN PREP. October 7, 2011

I will admit, I love love love the night before a long run. I’m big into routines. Charge the garmin, make a playlist, set out the gels, etc, etc.

.

So I’m sitting here eating my Jenny Craig dinner,

(omg, so good)

…and I’m stumped.

I’ve got to figure out a way to take this workout with me.

I know you can do advanced workouts on the garmin, but I don’t know if that’s what it’s for.

Anyone know?

And is it weird that I just ate a whole zucchini?

THREE THINGS THURSDAY. October 6, 2011

Filed under: injury,jenny craig,tempo,track,weight loss — Courtney @ I CAN DO THIS @ 7:53 pm

1. This morning was my Thursday tempo run. We jog a mile to our measured track, then we do our tempo run, and then we jog back. Today, we were supposed to run 20 minutes and see how far we could get. My coach wanted me to get to 2.5 miles (8:00 pace). But I couldn’t do it. 2.4 will have to do (8:21 pace).

Quarters were good for the first mile, then went downhill.

1:59, 1:57, 2:02, 2:03
2:06, 2:08, 2:10, 2:11
2:08, 1:12 (for .15)

.

2. The real bummer about this run is that my shin is bugging the crap out of me now! It started on Monday when I ran. Usually if something hurts, I do some extra icing, and it goes away by the next run. This one didn’t go away. Hurt at track on Tuesday night and it’s been hurting all day. It’s annoying.

.

3. On the upside, I went to Jenny Craig today and I’m down to 126 :)

I think that’s about 5 pounds in 5 weeks. I LOVE the food. I just had cheesecake. mmmmmm

LOTS OF MILES. October 5, 2011

Filed under: calories,cookies,Garmin,pace,run,track,training,weight loss — Courtney @ I CAN DO THIS @ 6:01 am

I am feeling kinda beat up right now. Lots of miles in the last few days.

Or at least, a lot more than usual:

Coach added an extra workout on Monday, and even though it was 4.25 easy miles, I’m feeling it. Not sore, just totally depleted. And a lot more pains than usual.

.

Anyway, the workouts have been good.

The 16 miler on Saturday was actually amazing!

It was my longest run since the San Diego Marathon in June, so it was messing with my head a little bit. But Coach gave me a really fun workout:

Miles 1-3 @ 10:50, Miles 2-3 @ 9:30, Miles 4-7 @ 10:50, Mile 8 @ 9:30, Mile 9-10 @ 10:50, Mile 12 @ 9:30, Mile 13 @ 10:50, Miles 14-16 @ 10:00

.

I spent some time trying to figure out how to remember all this once I was running, then someone told me I can program the workout into my Garmin.

I charged my Garmin and my iPod on Friday night, and headed out the door on Saturday morning. As I was gathering my gear, I thought “I hope my iPod doesn’t die, or something equally as tragic.”

I was kinda stressed about running that long by myself. Worried I’d let my mind take over.

As I was leaving my neighborhood, I turned on my Garmin and it immediately turned off. Tried it again, same thing. It said Low Battery then shut down.

I had no idea why because I specifically charged it! So I turned around and went home to plug it in for a few minutes and see if it would give it enough juice to get me through the run.

I got some charge, then headed back out.

The Garmin worked for 2.7 miles. And then it died. For good.

I panicked for a minute, then realized the only thing I could do was keep running.

Luckily, I know where all the mile markers are on the course because I have run it every Saturday for over a year. I didn’t know if I’d get my paces right, but I at least knew when to speed up and slow back down. And I felt pretty confident that my 10:50′s were right on target since that’s the pace I’ve memorized from all my long runs so far.

.

The run felt great! I loved changing the pace over and over. It kept it interesting and my legs never got tired, never hurt. I finished and was able to turn on my Garmin long enough to see the time of day. I calculated that it took me 2:44. When I emailed my Coach to tell him the bad news, he said I’d done a good job of pacing because he had me coming in at 2:46.

I think the key is to relax and enjoy!

.

Monday he added a new workout in for me. I usually only run Tuesday Track, Thursday Tempo, and Saturday Long Run.

He had me go 45 minutes “very easy”. Don’t look at your pace, he told me.

So I went to Palm Beach and ran along the ocean first thing in the morning. It was super peaceful. I ended up at 4.25 miles, 10:36 pace. It was  a good shakeout.

.

Track last night was exhausting. Mile repeats. Which I usually hate, but he let me ease up when it started getting hard.

5 x 1 mile. 8:44, 8:19, 8:05, 8:51, 8:56

.

Even though I slept in compression tights last night, I feel run down and yucky today. I’m still doing 1200 calories a day on Jenny Craig, but I gained weight last week because I have gone back to my Oreo habit. I think I had 2 packages over the course of a week. Maybe 3. Since I can’t remember, it was probably 3.

It sucks. On days I go to JC and weigh myself, I always feel like “Oh, I lost weight. I deserve Oreos.” Then on long run days, I’m like “Oh, I ran 2 hours. I deserve Oreos.”

When I first started Jenny Craig, I was full every day. Now I’m hungry every day. She told me to get string cheese and eat that when I’m hungry, but I find myself craving Oreos. And giving in.

I guess you could say I was on an undercover assignment, infiltrating the society of non-blogging runners.

It sucked.

I’m back. (thanks to the nudging of 2 great gals: Courtney and Lesley)

.

I don’t know what happened, but all of a sudden, I just didn’t want to look at my computer more than was absolutely necessary. I stopped blogging and I pretty much stopped reading blogs.

But it’s been a great summer of running and I keep thinking I should be journaling it.

Anyway.

.

Here’s where I am now.

  • Dallas White Rock Marathon is 65 days away.
  • I have an awesome training plan from my awesome coach.
  • 4:30 is a totally doable goal.
  • I’ve gotten my mile PR down to 7:35.
  • I started Jenny Craig about a month ago and have lost about 5 pounds.

.

I run Tuesday Track, Thursday Tempo, and Saturday Long Run.

I usually don’t know the workout until the day before – which I love.

My coach changes and adjusts my plan each week according to my performance.

Some of my favorite workouts over the summer:

Of course, it wasn’t all fun. There were some pretty tough workouts in there. I dropped several f-bombs during some runs. I gave my coach the middle finger on 2 occasions. Almost puked once. Wanted to walk a million times. Just a sample of the ones that kicked my ass:

Soooo, all caught up!

This weekend, it’s 16 miles. 14 @ 10:50, and the last 2 miles @ 10:00.

Training for a 10:18 marathon pace.

On another note. Is anyone watching Ringer? I’m not a huge tv person, but OMG I love this show!

EGGPLANT PARM WITH QUINOA. August 17, 2011

I haven’t blogged lately because I haven’t felt like it. Soon, I need to go back and recap the last month because it’s been full of awesome speed (7:35 mile PR).

.

But for now, I’m jotting down this recipe I came up with by combining a few.

.

Eggplant Parm with Quinoa:

.

My boyfriend talked me into buying an $80 knife so I would start making healthy meals and stop eating $2 frozen dinners when he’s not here.

I’m still not sold, but at least I’m trying to make use of the knife that cost more than my running shoes.

.

Preheat oven to 450*

Slice one eggplant into 1/4″ slices.

Sprinkle salt on both sides and let it sit for 10 minutes.

.

This will take the moisture out of the eggplant.

While that’s sitting, start the quinoa.

Saute 1 garlic clove in olive oil until slightly browned.

Rinse 1/2 cup quinoa in water. This gets rid of the saponins which naturally coat the quinoa to detract birds.

Add the quinoa to the garlic and oil, and cover with 1 cup liquid. You can use water or any kind of broth. I used chicken broth because I had it left over from this quinoa dish we made this weekend.

Add salt, pepper, and crushed red pepper flakes.

Bring quinoa to a boil, reduce heat and simmer 20 minutes or until liquid is absorbed.

.

Rinse the eggplant and lay out on paper towel.

.

Dip eggplant in egg, then breadcrumbs, and lay out on a greased cookie sheet.

Cook on each side for 6 minutes.

Reduce heat to 350*

.

Spread 1/2 jar of sauce in the bottom of a glass dish.

Mix in the quinoa.

Lay the eggplant across the mixture.

Spread the rest of the sauce across the top of the eggplant.

Cover with shredded cheese.

Then chop up fresh basil and spinach and spread that on top of the cheese.

Bake at 350* for 25 minutes.

Take it out and put parmesan cheese all over. Then bake another 5 minutes.

JANUARY-JUNE MILES. July 21, 2011

Since I started my blog as a journal for myself, I sometimes look back through my posts to see where I’ve improved, things I can work on, etc.

Today, I was wondering what I was doing a year ago, so I looked back at my July 2010 posts and found one where I  compared my Jan-June 2009 miles with my Jan-June 2010 miles.

For kicks, I looked up my 2011 miles to compare…

.

January-June 2009: 176 miles

.

January-June 2010: 186 miles

.

January-June 2011: 460 miles

What a difference it makes to be injury-free!

THURSDAY EXCITEMENT. July 21, 2011

Filed under: crazy,dog,Garmin,mako,pace,run,speed,tempo — Courtney @ I CAN DO THIS @ 9:57 am

It’s not even 10am and I’ve hit both ends of the excitement spectrum.

THE GOOD:

Lately, I haven’t been able to do the speed workouts as fast as Coach wants me to, and it gets me down. I made it through track on Tuesday, but it felt like an easy workout.

This morning, we got the workout via email since Coach wasn’t coming:

Run to the start. Do 4 strides. Run 2 miles the first 1 minute slower than what you think your fastest mile would be. Then rest for 4 minutes from the last runner in. Then run a mile at 95% effort. Don’t collapse but it should feel uncomfortable effort wise by the half. Then try and relax. If you can hang until  the 3rd  quarter you will be fine. Remember the best way to run any given distance is at an even pace. Check your splits at the quarters.

.

This was totally confusing to me, but I decided to shoot for a 9-minute mile, then an 8-minute mile and just hope I could figure out how to keep myself on track. I never have to pace myself because Coach usually ends up running with me, and I just try to stay right behind him.

Incidentally, I started my watch, then hit LAP at each quarter so I didn’t have to do the math in my head. That worked out, plus I kept my eye on pace throughout each quarter and tried to keep it right at 9 or right at 8.

.

Anyway, I’m super stoked that I got to email my coach that “I did it” instead of telling him I didn’t make it. Now I keep checking my email like a loser, waiting to hear back from him. I hope he’ll be proud of me, but I always hope he gives me something constructive to work on for next time.

I learned a lot from this one. And HELLO…7:53 mile!

.

THE BAD:

So when I got home, I let my dog out back, and I checked for toads.

If you live in South Florida, you know what cane toads are. But they’re these giant toads that make me want to puke when I look at them. They’ve got a toxin that is poisonous to dogs, and of course they want to chase them when they see them.

Even though I checked before letting him out, there was still one out there that I didn’t see. I looked out, and Mako had it in his mouth shaking it back and forth like he was playing tug of war with another dog. Freaked me the F out!

I ran outside and got him, and brought him in. When they bite the toads, they start foaming at the mouth and shaking it all over the place because I think it stings.

That pic of the toad is like 20 minutes later. I thought he was dead because he was on his back while I was wiping the stuff out of my dog’s mouth, but then I saw him like this, so I shooed him out of my yard.

Luckily, puppy is ok, but it scared the crap out of me!

TUESDAY TRACK July 20, 2011

I made it through a track workout without falling back!

Although I shouldn’t get too excited, because I think everyone ran faster than they had to.

But seriously, this is the first time in a long time that I’ve completed the workout as prescribed, and I’m pretty happy. Coach S wasn’t there, so he called in the workout. I was supposed to do 12×400 @ 2:10, leaving on the 3′s.

There were 3 of us on the same pace, and none of us know how to effectively pace ourselves. There was a guy also leaving on the 3′s but he was supposed to run 2:00, and I think because he was in front of us, we started out too fast and spent the whole quarter slowing down. Once I figured this out, we started slower and ran a 2:06. I learned something.

It was an easy workout compared to the ones we usually get at both Tuesday Track and Thursday Tempo, but I left in a good mood instead of feeling defeated. And that’s kinda all that matters.

Plus, I was able to kill it on the last one.

5 MILES IN PICS. July 15, 2011

Filed under: beach,crazy,Garmin,huh?,pace,palm beach,pics of me :),run,speed — Courtney @ I CAN DO THIS @ 11:19 am

Since I was already playing with my camera today, I took it on my run.

I decided not to look at my pace during the run. So imagine my surprise when I finished and saw how fast my “easy” run was.

5 miles

47:48 – 9:34 pace

9:52, 9:28, 9:31, 9:43, 9:15

.

I ran in Palm Beach today. Where the pretty people live.

Clearly, I am not one of them.

.

Worth Ave, where the pretty people shop.

.

There is a cold water fountain on the Intracoastal, so I ran in loops so I could hit this thing a few times.

(caught mid-sentence. who was I talking to?)

.

It was so humid, that Ferregamo had condensation on the windows. Don’t they have people on staff to squeegee that off?

.

One of the storm drains had a Trojan box in it. I’m sure they have people to take care of things like that. No?

.

Back to the water fountain.

(I like how my blowfish face accentuates the circles under my eyes. Gotta use this face in more pics.)

.

I wanted to end on an even mile, so I circled the Society of the Four Arts a few times to add some mileage.

(either jazz hands, or I’m about to smack myself in the back of the head)

.

I love it when I plan my route right and I end up back at my car. Look how close I was when my watch beeped 5 miles.

.

Can’t tell which one’s mine?

Now can you?

.

After the run, I walked on the beach and stroked my goatee.

.

Till I saw a sand shark. It was only like a foot long, but it was enough to make me get out of the water.

.

I got stuck at the drawbridge on the way home, and I saw this woman run by in these:

Unfortunately, I’m serious.

.

I want to see where you run! If you’ve done any posts like this, post so I can live vicariously.

WHAT’S ONE SECOND? July 14, 2011

A lot!

.

This morning’s 6am run was 95% humidity, but I’ll still take that over running at 6pm when it’s a bazillion degrees.

.

It really doesn’t matter how fast or slow I run, it’s whether I can A) keep up, or B) beat my goal.

That’s when I feel good after a workout.

If I don’t hit my goal, I go home feeling like I suck.

At track on Tuesday, Coach wanted me to run my mile under 8:00. I couldn’t do it, and I left track in a bad mood. So today, I made my goal to finish the second mile faster than my track mile.

I only beat it by one second, but I’m really happy with my run.

On Tuesday, I slowed down each quarter, and I couldn’t even sprint at the end. But today, I ran my last quarter in 1:57, which was a big improvement to me.

.

What makes you feel like you had a good workout?

Does hitting your goal affect your mood?

TUESDAY TRACK. July 12, 2011

Man, this one was hard. Heat index was 96 at 6pm, and I’m already a big baby about running in the evening anyway. I started out with a bad attitude. As usual.

Coach told me last week that this would be a one mile time trial, but he changed the plan.

1 x 400 (1:46)

1 x 800 (3:37)

1 x 1600 (8:14)

I ran with Coach – as usual – and he told me we were doing the last mile at 7:30. I never know if that’s what he really means, or if he’s just trying to get a reaction out of me. I keep quiet.

When I realize he’s serious, I start to panic.

He told me to just keep up and don’t look at my watch.

I cheated.

I looked at my watch at the 1/4 mile and we were a few seconds under. Shit.

As usual, I was my own worst enemy and I was mentally weak. It affected my breathing, and I kept slowing down more and more. With more than 1/2 mile left, I was wheezing and couldn’t get my breathing under control.

The only thing that makes me feel better about it is that I wasn’t even able to pick it up at the end like I usually am.

I finished the mile in 8:14

Coach asked me why it was so hard. I don’t know – heat and humidity I guess.

I felt like crap because I failed at the workout, and I didn’t even run enough distance to feel like I’d at least logged some mileage. So I asked my boyfriend to do a cooldown jog with me. We ran another 1/2 mile at an easy 10:00 pace and I felt much better.

When I start to feel sorry for myself that it’s SO hot and SO humid and I’m SO slow, I just have to take a step back and say “I’m lucky to get to do what I do” and look where I get to do it.

.

I want to say thanks to Dorothy for the advice going into this workout. She is so absolutely freaking amazing and I <3 her!

TIME TRIAL. July 11, 2011

I hate getting the track workout before I get to track, because it gives me time to stress over it. I do not want to disappoint my coach, and I figure if he gives me an assignment it’s because he thinks I can do it.

I actually got tomorrow’s track workout 4 days ago. How’s that for plenty of time to stress!

.

One Mile Time Trial

.

Until recently, I’ve only heard of these things. I’m not even sure I knew what they were. Coach had them do one a few weeks ago, but I missed track that night, so I didn’t have to do it.

My boyfriend went 6:34

I think I can do in the 7′s because I’ve done miles that fast during tempo runs, but I suck at running fast for a mile. I can kill it on quarter mile repeats, but a mile seems really long to me to push as hard as I can, and I’m worried that I’ll start out too fast and run out of steam in the last quarter. Mentally as well as physically.

Do I try to keep up with people faster than me?

Do I try to keep pace with people my speed?

Do I pace myself for 3/4 and go all out for the last 1/4 mile?

.

Any tips for running a one mile time trial?

MORE RAIN. July 9, 2011

It was another rainy long run this week.

I’m going crazy without a TEAM to train with, so I usually post on Facebook on Friday nights to see if anyone is meeting up anywhere. 2 of my San Diego teammates – Lesley and Val – were running in Delray Beach this morning, so drove down there and met them. As soon as I exited I-95, it started to rain.

.

We sloshed through 8.18 miles (hi, Dorothy!) of pretty hard rain at times. At one point, we even stopped under a beach cover and waited a few minutes.

It was fun. We took it easy and ran 8/2 intervals, which was really nice because I’ve been having shin pains for the last 2 weeks and I think it’s from trying to run too fast.

After the run, we had breakfast at Panera. (their coffee sucks)

On the way home, I stopped in Palm Beach and walked 1.65 miles in the sand. And more rain. But I was already wet anyway, so I figured why not.

.

I don’t have any pics from today, so here is one of me and Lesley climbing through a window at a bar in San Diego, wearing our marathon medals. I let her go first because I had a skirt on.
